Original windy city House honcho Terry Hunter takes a colourful walk around the RMX-1000 isolator effects and is blown away by the way he can manipulate the audio in a very familiar hands on way.

Buried deep inside our exclusive poolside suite at the seminal WMC hangout, The Shelborne Hotel, Rik showed Terry how he can adjust many of the parameters of the RMX-1000 to his own style and how he can use the Roll running along perfectly in time, thanks to the RMX-1000’s new BPM engine.

Djeff: One Night Q&A

Tell us about the house music scene in Angola. Do you see it as an extension of the scene in South Africa or is there something unique to Angola’s house music?

The real house music scene in Angola right now is something very new. During the 90’s everyone enjoyed and listened to those classics like Reel 2 Real, Robin S, Sizequeen, Armand Van Helden… but about 5 years ago was when the BOOM happened. We always heard alot of kwaito and South African house music and of course they were really inspiring for us. Their music is created with big melodies, spectacular vocals filled with soul and instrumentals with incredible journeys composed with a unique percussion. We are all Africans and identify with these elements which make us dance and vibrate. Our music of course is influenced by them but we have begun to create a unique identity in this world of house music.

You are a DJ, producer, Television host…tell us more about the TV Show you have in Angola

Its a top 10 video clip program where the public votes for their favorite video by messaging. Every week I present the top 10 of that week.

Last year you set up your own label, Kazukuta Records what artists can we expect to see you working with in 2012?

It is true, Kazukuta is still very new in this world but already we have prepared good releases for the world representing the house music made in Angola. This year we will have the opportunity to debut new soundtracks from Gari Sinedima, BZB aka Xort, Helder Mendes, Cef, Maskarado, Silyvi, Homeboyz, Mario Marques, Dj Malvado, Renato Xtrova, Dorivaldo mix amongst others.

You have released the track One Night feat. Sandy Spady with Tribe Records. Tell us about the experience working on that track and how the song has been received when you play it?

This song was born a bit accidently when I was talking with a big friend of mine named Alias Rhythm, I showed him a bootleg that I did of “Ayo-Life is Real” and he told me that Sandy Spady, a common friend, had really liked the beat and wanted to sing on an instrumental of mine. They recorded and sent me the vocals, and as soon as i heard it I created the whole base and melody in function of what I felt with the vocals. People’s reaction has been real good, it’s a more tech and dark vibe relative to the music I have come to make but the journey is present and the beat helps to go through the track with Sandy’s fascinating voice.

What else can we expect from you and Tribe Records in 2012?

In the moment I’ve been remixing many tracks for Tribe that will be launched real soon. I’m also preparing some more originals to launch with them and until the end of the year who knows, maybe a album from Djeff!

More and more Southern African artists have been participating at the WMC each year…can we expect to see you there this year? If so will you be playing?

Of course, my first experience was last year which I actually went only to feel the vibe and all around but got an opportunity to play in the event of House You Party which I’ll like to send thanks to French Twins, Rork, Hallex M and Olivier Velay for the shot. Yes this year I already have confirmed House You Party on the 21st and Nulu Party on the 23rd.

What tracks this year are you really feeling? What track do you think will be a favorite at WMC?

At this moment I’m really feeling my new tracks like One night, Piluka, Sikama, Boddhi Satva - The quest, Nding Gaba e Dj Spen - Until you, Reel People - Golden Ladies (Vega Roots Mix). During the conference I believe some of the bombs will be Migosy-Skiline (Sean Maccabe Mix) or Hardsoul - back together (DJ Meme Classic Mix).

What producers or artists have been most influential in your journey as an artist.

Louie Vega, Erick Morillo, Boddhi Satva, N’Dinga Gaba, Joe Claussel, Black Coffee

In North America and Europe artists and labels have been faced with the challenge of changes in the music industry and piracy…Some prolific house music artists have talked about the challenges of making money in this industry…what are some of the challenges facing artists and labels in Africa?

-In Africa its the same, or sometimes worse. You quickly find your music being sold on the streets. Today with the internet on the one side it’s real good but on another its also bad. A track from Angola goes to France and in a matter of seconds it’s in Canada… This makes artists have to increase their budget to compensate all the work we deposit in the studio to create our songs. In Angola per example there’s no need to put the songs on the internet to sell because it still works the old way over there, you make the physical cd and choose a day to launch it in the market.

What keeps you going despite the challenges in this industry and what can we expect from Djeff in the future?

-What keeps me going, fighting and working and to always be better is the fact of people recognizing my work that I’ve come to develop. I got my own way to think and execute my work, so that there is nothing better when you’re recognized and respected, because an artist has got to be free to create that which goes in his soul and mind. In the future you will have much more music from me always with better quality and a more mature DJ Djeff.

Tell those who may not know about local house music makers in Angola you think we should check out.

Silyvi, Homeboyz, Renato Xtrova, Jesus, Havaiana, Dorivaldo Mix
